Tips on How to Stop a Cat From Biting

11/18/2021

The most obvious way to prevent a cat from biting is to stop him from exhibiting it in the first place. Cats will bite when they are threatened. For example, if you were to lock the door to your bedroom and he was waiting there, he would likely bite to gain access to your room. As you can see, this is why many cats are given "free rein" of the house and do what they want.

If he's allowed to, he'll bite on just about anything he can find. Cats have sharp teeth, so they're attracted to the smell of their own urine or the hint of a food item they can get their teeth on. Don't underestimate the amount of stuff he could chew up if he got a hold of your favorite purse. Not only will this hurt you or anyone else that comes into contact with it, but also it can pass bacteria from your pet to you.

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this behavior in order to prevent problems in the future. One of the most obvious things to look for is whether your cat is sporting a new coat of fur. Since a cat's hair is what they use as their way to mark their territory and to play, a new coat can be a sign of affection. Make sure he's brushed his coat before bringing him home.

If you already have a cat, check his teeth. Are they all white? White is very indicative of a non-aggressive cat. But if he's been around other pets and is exhibiting any aggression toward them, he could be displaying signs of discomfort toward them. Look for redness, irritation, or swelling near his molars or his mouth. Some cats don't have any reaction to household animals but will attack a person or pet, if they are introduced to each other.

When learning how to stop a cat from biting, you may notice some of his habits. For instance, does he always seem to be looking at something when you approach? Does he jump at you as he walks by? Sometimes his ears start to stand out and puff out as he breathes? Watch for any sign that he's defensive, such as hissing or growling. Also, if he's been scratching, he may not want to scratch something else as well because it may mean he's damaged something.

As soon as you figure out the answer to, "How to stop a cat from biting?" you can find out what's causing it. If it's stress, then the best thing to do is to eliminate the source of the stress. Cats have their own personalities and are sensitive to their owners' moods so removing some of the stress in your life will calm him down.

Other common causes of a cat not wanting to be touched include things he's perceived as threats, like another cat, or moving furniture in his territory. You can also help him understand that he has nothing to fear from you because you won't hurt him.
